Effective recovery plan and treatment for your neck pain
Whiplash or an acceleration/deceleration injury is an injury to the neck, caused by rapid forwards and backwards motion of the head. This occurs most commonly from a car accident, although this can also be sustained through sports, involving direct contact or a fall onto the head.
What are the symptoms of whiplash?
If you experience whiplash or neck pain as a result of an injury, then it is recommended to visit a doctor or hospital to get the neck checked for fractures and nerve damage. Many people experience different types of symptoms, however, the most common symptoms are:
Pain and stiffness in the neck may not come on immediately but develop over the following 24 to 48 hours
Reduced range of movement in the cervical spine (neck)
Blurred vision (this should go within 24 hours if they persist consult your doctor)
Pain and stiffness may last a few days, to a few weeks, depending on the severity
Watch out for the following:
Severe pain in the back of the head
Pins and needles or numbness in the shoulders or arms
Symptoms of cervicalgia
Pain in the neck or cervicalgia (linked to headaches) is a pain in the neck that does not radiate outwards or downwards. The neck muscles are constantly under tension to hold the head up. Symptoms of cervicalgia include:
Occasional sharp pain in the neck, usually on movement.
More constant aching in the neck.
Pain is frequent when rotating the head/neck.
A feeling of tightness around the neck and upper back.
It may be tender to palpate (feel).
Stiffness in the neck.
Pain in the neck and nervy tingles
Pain in the neck which radiates to other areas is usually a result of nerves being trapped. The cause of the trapped nerve can be tight muscles, disc damage, or the formation of bony deposits.
Deep pain in the neck radiates into the shoulder, arms or fingers.
